The charges against Mr Chippy Shaikh, the
suspended chief of arms acquisitions for the defence force, may be withdrawn and
he might be reinstated in his position.
The departmental investigation into the circumstances of his suspension was finalised this weekend after the second session was held by the investigating panel led by Mr Zam Titus, director-general of the department of provincial and local government.
Titus is currently finalising the investigation report before it is handed to Mr Mosiuoa Lekota, minister of defence.
According to Mr Sam Mkhwanazi, spokesperson for the department of defence, Lekota will release a statement regarding Shaikh’s future once he has studied the report.
Mkhwanazi didn’t want to expand on the preliminary findings of the panel.
According to information known to Die Burger, testimony was allegedly given in connection with various contradictions surrounding the suspension.
According to testimony, Shaikh’s suspension was related to the multimillion rand arms deal investigation, whereas the contrary had initially been alleged.
Shaikh was suspended because he had allegedly supplied confidential information to unauthorised persons between 1 October and 1 November without ministerial permission.
Die Burger was informed that Shaikh had, under instruction and in the absence of Lekota, supplied information on behalf of the department of defence regarding certain parts of the preliminary report on the arms investigation.
Apparently, objections were also made regarding slanderous accusations in the arms report.
